EMAIL UPDATE: SpamAssassin
SpamAssassin is now working! Enabling the SpamAssassin option allows you to have your e-mail scanned by a program that tries to identify potential "spam" messages based on the content of the message. It will add message headers or subject line tags that you can then use (via your client's e-mail filtering capabilities) to delete or file away in a separate folder any likely "spam" messages.

SECURITY UPDATE
Do you use the modem pool? We have been seeing an increasing number of virus-infected computers using the modem pool. When using your home computer to connect to the University, please take the time to install and update anti-virus software. The University provides one free copy for personal use at http://www.umn.edu/adcs/help/virus. For information about the latest virus threats see http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/.

UPDATE: APPLETALK/IPX UPGRADE
Departments in Shepherd Labs are next to be upgraded in the AppleTalk and IPX conversion schedule for Jan. 2003 (AppleTalk and IPX will be discontinued; they are communication protocols used in data sharing, printing, and server connectivity.) NTS and the upgrade team will work directly with staff in all departments to prepare for the upgrade. More info at: http://www.umn.edu/oit/ipx-appletalk/.

NEXT GENERATION NETWORK
In preparation for the next major data network upgrade at the U, NTS is starting the planning process with a traffic study and a complete wiring audit. Information sessions are also being planned for customers, and a web survey will be available for direct customer feedback. Look for it next month!

CORRECTIONS: TELEPHONE CALLER-ID
After the telephone upgrade, for all off campus caller IDs a non-working number (626-7777) was displayed as the caller ID. Now, off campus calls will display accurate telephone numbers, i.e., UofM 612 and individual telephone numbers. For custom names or to block a number, send a software order to NTS at http://www.umn.edu/nts/.

EXTENDED: FREE TRIAL FOR NEW ENHANCED VOICEMAIL
You can still sign up and participate in an introductory trial of the new Enhanced Voice Mail Service! Check out the fax option, sending off campus calls, or having deleted messages stay in your box for a week. http://www.umn.edu/nts/voicemail/.
