PEAK SEASON FOR WORK ORDERS
August is the busiest month for work orders at NTS. Work orders that should be completed before the beginning of school must be sent to NTS as soon as possible. AUGUST 28: APPLETALK/IPX PROJECT COMPLETION

UPDATE: NEXT GENERATION UPGRADE PROJECT
We're now reviewing thirteen proposals received in response to the RFP that was presented last Spring. Final selection and presentation to the Board of Regents is planned for this September.

UofM WIRELESS AUTHENTICATION BUG FIXED
A bug in the password handling section of the UofM “Wirewall” wireless authenticator was discovered recently. The bug was fixed and identified as the inability to pass special shell characters - such as (!@#$%^&*) - that are often used in passwords.

UPGRADED: QIP DNS/DHCP SERVICES
The IP management package –QIP- was upgraded successfully on June 28, 2003 from 5.0SP3 to 6.0. This is a provisioning tool that manages the DNS sources (Domain Name Server which translates the names and addresses of all campus computers, hosts, servers, etc. to computer addresses. QIP also provides DHCP services (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). The upgrade provides info tech managers with easier administrative tools for grouping people, objects, and subnets, thus providing inheritance and broader rights.

INTERNET SERVICE CHANGES
NTS provides dual-service connectivity for outside service. This is implemented in multiple ways. Connectivity with the research internet/Internet2 is backed up by a standard connectivity to the public network/ Internet1 (Internet1 or commodity internet). The present service to commodity internet is via two carriers, Level3 Telecomm (formerly Genuity) and Qwest Communications. The Qwest contract is terminating and an RFP . . . [MORE]

NEW BORDER CHANGES: NORTHERN LIGHTS GIGAPOP
NTS manages the Northern Lights Gigapop, a partnership of the University of Minnesota and the state of Minnesota Intertechnologies group. The Northern Lights Gigapop service provides connectivity to the larger network of carriers for the University and the state of Minnesota. New border changes to the Gigapop will be implemented to reflect the primary border with the same capacity and hardware. FLASH COMMUNICATION SERVER PILOT PROJECTS COMPLETED
