ISP IMPROVEMENTS AHEAD
The U uses two Internet Service Providers to maintain access to the Internet. One ISP contract will expire at the end of October. Through an RFP process we will increase our contracted bandwidth to 550 Mbits and improve recoverability in case of a vendor failure. Then if we lose connection to either provider, we can maintain a 550 Mbit connection with the remaining vendor. The change and any recovery will be transparent to our customers.

COMPLETED: FIBER AUDIT; NEW TOOL: MYSOFT
The fiber audit on the Twin Cities Campus is done; 174 buildings are now fully audited. All aspects of the audit were completed in one year; all fiber optic cable was physically located and audited for originating and terminating locations, and data has been entered into the NTS MySoft database . . . ORDER AND REPAIR TICKETS UPDATED IN THE FIELD
Related to the new database (MySoft) upgrade is the NTS in-field updating of all orders and repair tickets. Technicians will enter all information promptly at job completion, thereby more effectively updating database and wiring information. To support the network demand for this task, more wireless hubs will be installed across campus.

12,000 CALLS TO 1-HELP IN SEPT
We want to thank everyone who called 1-HELP, the Technology Helpline, and patiently waited for a consultant to help them. As of Sept. 27 we answered approximately 12,000 calls. The breakdown is: 63% Micro/Internet (phone support M-Th, 8am-11pm; Fri, 8am-5pm; Sat, noon-5pm; Sun 5-11pm); 32% Telecommunications (phones and network problems) and 5% Enterprise (the Telecom and Enterprise services have live, non-emergency phone support M-F, 8am-5pm). 1-HELP: http://www.umn.edu/adcs/help

MALWARE ATTACKS RESULT IN CLOSED ACCOUNTS
Along with the regular rush at the start of the school year, helpline staff dealt with the virus and worm attacks that occupied the rest of the world. To control this problem on campus, network (ethernet) jacks were turned off for vulnerable computers, access was disabled for some modem pool users, and VPN and wireless access was curtailed. We are continuing to work with affected customers, assisting them with cleaning up their computers.

ACCOUNT CLOSED? PLEASE REMEMBER TO CALL
To keep network services running smoothly for everyone, we need to hear from more people; right now we have quite a few "open" problem "tickets" for network jacks that were shut off due to Blaster and Welchia. It is important that people who have cleaned up their machines call 1-HELP so we can restore service to those network jacks. Many people may not realize that a particular jack number is assigned to them, and that jack will not be turned back on until we hear from them.

HELPLINE SUPPORTS RESNET
In addition to answering phones, replying to e-mail questions, and providing help to walk-ins, at the beginning of the school year, 1-HELP provides support for many ResNet users: http://www.resnet.umn.edu/. We assist Residential Hall students who have signed up for this ethernet service configure their computers and get connected to the Internet. So far this year we've scheduled over 165 ResNet appointments.
