Frank Grewe remembered

MEMORIAL FOR FRANK GREWE
Frank Grewe, a respected colleague with 26 year of service to the University community, passed away on February 24. Everyone who uses e-mail at the University is a beneficiary of Frank's professional vision, team building savvy, and expertise in managing the rise of Internet Services. Many of our readers who belong to the [net-ops] mailing list heard the sad news the next day. Funeral services were held February 28. University News Release: http://www.ur.umn.edu

REMINDER: SYMANTEC ANTIVIRUS AT THE U
U of M Symantec Antivirus (SAV) info here: http://www.umn.edu/adcs/help/virus/ . View SAV's Current Threat List to learn when they added protection (updates) against the latest malware: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html#threat_list

DOOMED: VIRUSES ARE NOT JUST A NUISANCE!
We are seeing a very destructive new MyDoom.F virus on campus. It deletes random files on drives C-Z; in addition, it is a mass-mailing worm that opens a backdoor that allows an attacker access to the infected computer! Please make sure your anti-virus software is up-to-date. There is a removal tool for the virus, but it won't bring back the deleted files. More at: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.mydoom.f@mm.html

E-MAIL UPDATE: HARDWARE UPGRADES
The second round of hardware upgrades to e-mail servers is about to commence. Several months ago we replaced 3 of the central e-mail POP/IMAP servers, increasing CPU speed and performance for about half of the users. We are receiving 3 more of the new machines, which will replace the last 2 old machines. When this upgrade is complete, we will have 6 machines for POP/IMAP access. Hardware is also on the way to upgrade the Premium Service machine, including an upgrade to the operating system.

MID MARCH ON ST. PAUL CAMPUS: NETWORK UPGRADE
The Network Upgrade installation team will begin installing new hardware on the St. Paul campus in the middle of March. Fliers will be posted in the buildings on the day of the implementation. Installation of hardware should not be service affecting. To report network outages call 1-HELP. Check the project website frequently for changes or updates on the installation process: http://www.umn.edu/nts/networkupgrade/

INVENTORY SPACE MADE READY
Gopher GigaNet upgrade hardware will be arriving soon. To stage the implementation preparation and housing of the hardware, NTS will receive and store the orders as they come in. Storage space at the NTS inventory area is now cleared and ready to receive the orders. Project website: http://www.umn.edu/nts/networkupgrade/ . See warehouse pictures.

GOPHER GIGANET DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
The design of the new Gopher GigaNet was based on input received from approximately 200 people in 60+ academic, research, and administrative units involving faculty, staff and students. 50% of the college and professional schools were interviewed as part of this effort. This information was used to obtain vendor product information via the RFI process and to define the requirements specifications in the RFP.

NETWORK UPGRADE PROJECT: INTERESTING NUMBERS
2533: total number of edge etherswitches with initial new network -- 213: total number of aggregation etherswitches with initial new network -- 54,912: total number of ports equipped with new network, not counting SFP's in etherswitches or router ports -- 13 to 17 etherswitches: average installations needed per day in order to keep on schedule (3-4 closets per day).

PORT SHUT OFF CALLS TO HELPLINE
Over 550 ports and modem access were shut off in the last couple of weeks due to new viruses and worms that were disrupting service to other Internet users.

PORT SHUT OFF PREVENTION
To avoid causing problems for yourself and others, run Windows Update on YOUR windows system. Also, EVERYONE should update their virus software daily.

MARCH DEADLINE FOR ITV 2004-2005 COURSES
ITV program coordinators must submit credit course requests for the 2004-2005 academic year by the end of March. The highest priority for the U's ITV network is given to graduate and undergraduate credit instruction; and of those, ongoing programs are given first scheduling priorities. See the Video Network Services online request form here: http://www.umn.edu/vns/

ITV REQUESTS FOR FALL AND SUMMER 2004 AND SPRING 2005
VNS is in the process now of scheduling ITV courses for the 2004 summer session. Requesters for Fall 2004 courses will get e-mail by the end of April indicating that the request has been received and an update on the status of the request. Spring 2005 course requests will be scheduled in July.

WEBCT COURSE SITE SPACE INCREASED
Server space for each WebCT course site has been increased to 100 megabytes. Sites that deliver large audio or video files are still encouraged to consider an alternate delivery method, such as CD-ROM and to optimize files for the Internet since small media files benefit students who connect to WebCT course sites via a modem. See http://webct.umn.edu/ . More about WebCT server space at: http://webct.umn.edu/instructors/build/build-6.shtml
