NEW IE CRITICAL UPDATE: INSTALL IT IMMEDIATELY
Windows users: Microsoft released a critical update that addresses a vulnerability in functionality used by Internet Explorer. This update is available via Windows Update and to those running Automatic Updates. Malicious websites have been exploiting this flaw for months to silently download and run software on the computers of unsuspecting people. All Windows users should download and install this patch immediately

E-MAIL UPDATE
The Internet Services staff is preparing to test the first e-mail system on the new SAN (Storage Area Network) at the U's WBOB site. Eventually, all e-mail storage will be moved to the SAN to provide the additional storage needed for IMAP (e-mail) folders.

MILLIONS BLOCKED: E-MAIL STATS
In June, central e-mail spam controls blocked 7,534,624 messages, and anti-virus controls blocked another 280,724 messages. In May, central e-mail spam controls blocked 12,025,644 messages, and anti-virus controls blocked another 174,731 messages.

AUGUST 14: CAMPUS NETWORK CORE UPDATE
On August 14th, NTS will implement the new core routing platform for the Twin Cities Campus Network. This will involve configuration changes to the current and future data network for the Twin Cities network including internet access and modem pool. The campus network will be interrupted throughout the day. E-mail updates will be sent to those signed up for the building updates. Check http://www.umn.edu/nts/networkupgrade or call the 1-GIGA hotline (612-301-4442).

WHERE IS THE NEW NETWORK EDGE COMPLETED?
The new network edge installation is completed on the Saint Paul campus, Como Printing and Graphics, and is progressing throughout the Health Sciences complex now with PWB, Moos Tower, and Weaver Densford Halls. In early August the West Bank area is scheduled to begin.

BY THE NUMBERS: SWITCHES DONE AND REMAINING
Edge equipment, the switches providing connections in the buildings, continues to be on schedule. As of June 21, approximately 700 switches were installed and 1900 remain; 255 telecommunications closets completed and 545 remain; 55 buildings are done with 240 to complete.

BOOK REVIEW: AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO CIFS
Christopher Hertel, NTS member of the networking design team since 1996, has published an "authoritative" guide to CIFS, Microsoft's de-facto standard for network filesharing. UMCAL: CALENDARING SYSTEM NOW AVAILABLE
UMCal, a new campus-wide calendaring system, went into production June 1st. UMCal is available to faculty and staff on all campuses, and it is integrated into the class portal for the freshmen class of 2008. A web client is available as are desktop clients for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. More info at http://www.umn.edu/umcal/ .

NEW SAS WITHOUT PROGRAMMING COURSE
In August, UTTC is offering a new 16-hour hands-on course, "SAS Enterprise Guide - Introduction to Point-and-Click SAS!" SAS Enterprise Guide makes many of the capabilities of SAS available through intuitive "wizards," thereby allowing users who are not programmers to utilize the power of SAS for statistical analysis, and for access, management, analysis, and presentation of data. SUCCESS: PEOPLESOFT DISASTER RECOVERY TEST
On July 1 and 2 a successful disaster recovery test was held for the PeopleSoft Student Administration and Human Resources system.
