SPAM AND VIRUS STATS.
In March, 2006 central e-mail spam control blocked 23,380,841 messages. Anti-virus controls blocked an additional 24,183 messages.
INDICTED! 4 NIGERIAN E-MAIL FRAUD SCAMMERS

ALLEGED SPAMMER FINED $900,000.
An Internet marketing company disguised their spam as personal e-mail messages and misled consumers about the terms of their promotion. See the March 24, 2006 "Alleged spammer pays $900,000 fine" MSNBC story at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11996880/.
SPYWARE BEWARE!
Two anti-spyware groups, the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) and the Stopbadware Coalition have released lists of advertisers that use "adware" software. GOPHER MESSAGING ARRIVES ON THE TC CAMPUS.
On Sunday, March 26 Gopher Messaging was moved to full production on the TC campus, and all voicemail accounts are now on the Gopher Messaging system. More than 13,000 voice mailboxes were set up with a new personal greeting, name, and password. Later in the year Auto Attendants will move. Gopher Messaging is the fourth voicemail system the University has adopted.
GOPHER MESSAGING WEB ACCOUNTS.
A Web Account, in addition to the telephone access, is a standard feature of the new Gopher Messaging voicemail. Every University Gopher Messaging user can access and use their web account to set up personal features, check messages, manages lists, and much more. See http://www.umn.edu/nts/go4msg/.
WEB ACCOUNT ACCESS IS OPTIONAL.
During the cutover Gopher Messaging Web Account access and passwords confused some people. The Web Account is only an additional feature. If the Web Account is never initialized and activated, users can continue to receive voicemail messages much as before.
WEB ACCOUNT PASSWORDS.
For security reasons, any Web Account that was not set up has had its initial password reset. Voicemail users who want to access the web interface, but need a password reset, can call 1-HELP and get it set for free.
TIME STAMPS FOR GOPHER MESSAGING.
A time stamp feature, announcing the sender information and time of message, is in the new Gopher Messaging; this feature is not activated for all mailboxes. To activate it, make these selections: Personal Options (4) and Message Playback (8). Then select, and turn on, Timestamp (1) and Sender information (2).
FORWARD MESSAGES TO E-MAIL.
A popular feature of Gopher Messaging is the ability to forward messages to a central e-mail account. Voicemail messages and faxes are forwarded as attachments. This feature can be activated in the web interface. To set it up, select "Web Account Access" from the NTS website <http://www.umn.edu/nts> and login. Click Options, then Mail Filters. Click the Edit button and make appropriate selections.
OLD VOICEMAIL SYSTEM IN SERVICE THROUGH MAY 1.
A reminder: the old voicemail system will remain in service until May 1, 2006. To listen to and delete old messages dial 612-626-1232. |

PASSWORDS AND SHARED SECRETS.
When University students, staff, or faculty forget their Internet or Enterprise password, they can phone 1-help to get a temporary password. The Internet Services group recently added another security option, a shared secret, that 1-help consultants can use to help identify you. Set your "secret" on your Internet Accounts Options page at http://www.umn.edu/validate. Select the "Change your Internet Password" option.

Too busy to go to a voicemail orientation? Now you can receive the training that is most helpful and convenient for you! You can attend a one-hour live, interactive voicemail orientation over the web or view a 20-minute recorded presentation - both from the convenience of your own office. Click on "Voicemail Orientation" at http://uttc.umn.edu.

AWARDED: 2006 TEL GRANT RECIPIENTS.
